So I've gotten my first character through all but 4 missions in Prophecies. I have another about 1/2 way through Nightfall, but have not picked up Eyes yet... may do that this weekend or tonight.

Still, I find I'm running low on plat. I'm making a small amount, but I seem to spend it just as fast on skills, armor, etc. I haven't tried trading with other players yet, I'm still shy. I have been saving salvage material in my storage, and saving some runes and such that I view as decent. I also save my dyes for now, though the bulk of my fortune came from selling off a few whites I was lucky enough to find.

So... will it always be like this, trying to earn just enough money to get by? If so, is it just a matter of time before I can afford elite armor and be patient? (Yes, I know the elite armor is for looks only, but some do look nice). Or am I missing some way of earning more plat?

Should I be trying to sell more materials that I find? Should I salvage everything, or is it better to sell intact? What about runes? Should I always salvage them and sell, or just sell the item whole?

Just looking for any money making tips or suggestions. Thanks all.

Quick and entertaining (albeit unfortunately once-a-month only) non-farm way to get plat: treasure hunting. Earns about 20k per character first run. And since you're already partway through NF...

Also, if you don't mind farming, an easy, non-HM farm is right outside Lion's Arch, in North Kryta Province - kill all the tengu there for their feathers and crests (which can be salvaged from feathers). Not uber-profitable, but it is a decent money-maker. And I believe skale fins can be salvaged into valuable scales, so you might want to go after those while you're in the area.

Oh yeah, and make sure you're filling out your books. Those give decent cash. In EotN this will be a big help towards getting elite armors. Also note that EotN armors (as well as Nightfall's Ancient armor" are only 10k apiece, not 15k.

For the first time you should not spend any money one anything you dont need.
Like skills, you have prophecies, in prophecies there are lots of quests that give skills as reward,you should do these quests when you want a skill,only buy a skill if you really need it.

There are lots of armor collectors too they give you armor pieces for items that mobs drop around the area the collector is.In Prophecies i would suggest only to buy armor in yak's ben,lion's arch and then droknar's forge, which would be the max armor.

Prophecies is very newbie friendly, you can get many things for free in GWP.

Do not sell any materials you get, you will need them later, so its nice to save them from now on,you should use an identification kit on all weapon drops including white ones, and then sell the ones you wont keep to merchants,by identifying them you earn the money the merchant will give you for them.

About rune salvaging: you should always check the rune trader. Blue and Gold armor salvage pieces are your best bet for runes that sell for more than the salvage item at the merchant, but purple has a few possibilities too. Survivor insignia for example or Vigor runes. Bloodstained insignia, minor runes of soul reaping, etc. Just check the rune trader for current prices and decide whether salvaging is worth it.

Hey,
You should farm the collector items for Nicholas the Traveler each week and sell the gift.
This will give you about 25k each week without doing much, you can also farm the items and sell them.
In 4 weeks you will have 100k (enough for elite armor) without much work

This is very handy when having more accounts

Other advice. If you want money, get into trading

It will require a solid amount of money though. (buy cheap, sell high).

Doing Zquests when it's RA. This will give you 3k pr 3 wins. Repeat the quest about 5 times and you have 3 Zkeys (to sell)

Reading that... So every character will receive the maximum amount of gold/drops independently of the other characters on the account? So if I do that run on my warrior, and after that repeat it on my necro, will the necro get the max stuff? And on to my dervish and so on...

Yup per character

Be wary of when you opened them. Wait a long bit longer then a month not just 30 days to the day. Otherwise if you open them before they reset they could reset again from that moment you opened them.

as previously stated do the quests for the skills. there also comes a point in time where it is cheaper to buy a skill tome than it is to buy the skill from the skill vendor.

Make a PvP ranger and trap the Zaishen Elite for the max 6k Balthazar points that gives you. Then talk to Tolkano at the guild hall or the Great Temple of Balthazar and trade in 5k faction for one Zaishen key. These keys are worth around 4 platinum to other players.

Keep in mind that you have to first get the skills needed to do this and unlock the Zaishen Elite outpost. But once you do have it down, that's an easy 4k every day, which is more than enough to buy you elite armor in due time.

Once you've got past the first major hurdles of a new character cash wise; skills, max armor; the money starts coming in reasonably steadily through normal play. Playing around through quests and missions I can pull in a couple of platinum a day, and this does start to add up. ID weapon drops before selling the ones you don't want to merchants. Check with the rune trader before salvaging runes off armors. A few runes give you more sold to the trader than selling the unsalvaged armor to the merchant, but many won't

The trick to making money is not to spend it. If you're looking to save, only buy the essentials, and plan in advance

Just thought about this; it's actually quite useful for me too to hear all this as I got a new account and I'd forgotten what it's like to have to earn money from scratch, with no max-level characters to farm with.

And yes, save your pennies. Things to note:

1) Don't get weaps from weaponsmiths until you have lots of cash. I personally have only done it once, and that was because I needed inscribable daggers with max stats in mid-Nightfall. It's better to farm up a decent green (did that for my first ele, my derv, my mez, and my monk; my rit's green was a gift) or look for max drops (did that for most of my second ele's weapons, and I've got some good ones), or, if all else fails, go bargain hunting in a capital. You can usually find someone or other trying desperately to pawn off low-value greens. Also, note that if you do the hero training when you get Eye of the North you can get a free customized max weapon (I think it's inscribable, too, but I'm not sure) for your character (my favorite necro still uses the staff she got there - they come in all flavors). Oh, and of course your free green from completing the campaign (if you're really savvy, go with a group who've done the campaign waaay too many times - not only will it be easier, but you may run into someone like me who'd rather just give their book/amulet/whatever to someone who wants it than waste time trying to sell it).
2) Plan your build before making it. You'll end up buying fewer skills and saving money. Also, note that your Signet of Capture quest nets you I believe 2 free Signets of Capture.
3) Don't waste money on intermediate armor unless you are going for Survivor. In Proph, if your chara is lowbie, get to Beacon's and sit around for a while - eventually someone will show up who is giving free Droks Runs because they're testing a build (might take a few tries to get it done, but it saves several plat). In Factions, you may want to pick up Seitung armor but again it isn't really necessary - once you hit the Marketplace run north to KC; there are no monsters on the route. In NF of course you can pay usually 500g or less (try to get in a district where there are two ferrymen competing - they will keep lowering their prices substantially; sometimes you can even catch a free one from some kind person) to get a ferry to the Docks. So it's pretty easy as a lowbie to get good armor. If you really need midlevel armor, hit up the collectors. It won't kill you not to have insignia for a while at that level.
4) Plan your armor. Browse GuildWiki for styles you like, and look at the required materials. Stock up on those, and feel free to sell everything else (iron, scales, and feathers go for plenty). It'll save cash in the long run.
